Dua Lipa’s name means love in Albanian, a suggestion from her grandmother. She was born in West Hampstead, London in 1995 to Albanian parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, who had left Pristina in the 1990s. At age 11, her family moved to Kosovo, where she attended Mileniumi i Tretë School and grew up listening to her father, singer Dukagjin Lipa. She began posting covers of songs by P!nk and Nelly Furtado on YouTube at 14. By 15, she returned to London alone to pursue music, working as a waitress and a model.

In 2015, Dua Lipa signed with Warner Music Group and released her debut single New Love in August 2015, produced by Emile Haynie and Andrew Wyatt. Her second single Be the One became a hit across Europe, reaching number one in Belgium, Poland, and Slovakia. Her self-titled debut album, released on June 2, 2017, spawned the UK number-one single New Rules and the top-ten singles Be the One and IDGAF. In 2018, she earned five Brit Award nominations, winning British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act, performing at the O2 Arena. She later won a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for Electricity with Mark Ronson and Diplo in 2019. Her second album, Future Nostalgia 2020, produced hits like Don’t Start Now and Levitating, with Levitating becoming the most-streamed song in the US in 2021.

Dua Lipa is fluent in Albanian as her native language and speaks English with a British accent. She was in a relationship with model Anwar Hadid, the younger brother of Gigi and Bella Hadid. In 2023, she began a relationship with French director Romain Gavras during the Cannes Film Festival. Her grandfather, historian Seit Lipa, died of myocardial infarction in 1999. Her personal stylist is Lorenzo Posocco, and she is managed by Tap Management.

Dua Lipa’s single Levitating was the most-streamed song in the United States in 2021. She has won multiple Grammy and Brit Awards, and was appointed Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo. Her music is often described as dark pop.
