Who was Greta Garbo?

BIOGRAPHY

Greta Garbo — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Greta Lovisa Gustafsson was born on September 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden to Anna Lovisa Johansdotter and Karl Alfred Gustafsson. Her father died of nephritis when she was 14, forcing her to leave school and work at a department store. She appeared in a short advertising film for the store, which led to a small part in Luffar-Petter 1922. Encouraged, she won a scholarship to Dramatens elevskola, the Swedish drama school.

Career

Mauritz Stiller pulled her from drama school for the lead in The Saga of Gösta Berling 1924. After The Joyless Street 1925, both she and Stiller signed with MGM. Her first American film was Torrent 1926. She transitioned to talkies with Anna Christie 1930, earning an Oscar nomination. She starred in hits like Grand Hotel 1932 and Anna Karenina 1935, and received another nomination for Camille 1936. After the box office failure of Conquest 1937, she returned with Ninotchka 1939, which showcased her comedic side. Her last film was Two-Faced Woman 1941, which was condemned by the Catholic Church and failed at the box office.

Personal life

Garbo never married. She left John Gilbert standing at the altar in 1927. She was prone to chronic depression and sought remedies through Eastern philosophy and health food, but never gave up smoking and cocktails. She became a U.S. citizen in 1951. She lived in a seven-room apartment in New York City and often traveled with tycoons like Aristotle Onassis. She was extremely private and granted no interviews or signed autographs after the start of her career.

Legacy

Garbo’s influence extended beyond her films; she popularized trench coats and berets in the 1930s. She was voted the 8th Greatest Movie Star by Premiere Magazine and the 25th by Entertainment Weekly. In 2005, she appeared on a 37¢ U.S. postage stamp on what would have been her 100th birthday. The American Film Institute ranked her #5 on its list of 50 Greatest Screen Legends. She is remembered for her enigmatic persona, the Garbo mystique, and performances in films like Camille and Anna Karenina.
