Early life
At age 12, Helmut Kohl helped recover the charred bodies of neighbors from the rubble of bombed Ludwigshafen during World War II. That experience instilled a horror of war and shaped his political drive for peace and unity. He was born on 3 April 1930 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein into a conservative Catholic family. After the war, he studied politics and law at Heidelberg University, earning a doctorate. He entered politics in Rhineland-Palatinate, becoming the youngest state minister-president at age 39.
