Ian Holm Cuthbert was born on September 12, 1931, in Goodmayes, Essex, to Scottish parents who worked at the Essex mental asylum. His mother, Jean Wilson, was a nurse, and his father, Dr. James Harvey Cuthbert, was a psychiatrist. At age seven, Holm saw a production of Les Miserables that inspired his love of acting. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1950 to join the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Holm made his television debut in 1965 as Richard III in BBC’s The Wars of the Roses. He won his first BAFTA Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Bofors Gun 1968.
