Early life

Born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell on June 21, 1921, in Bemidji, Minnesota, she was the only girl among four brothers. Her father, a United States Army lieutenant, and her mother, a former drama student and actress, fostered her interest in the arts. After her father died, she worked as a receptionist to support the family while modeling, saving money for drama school.

She attended Van Nuys High School, performing in stage productions, then studied under Max Reinhardt and Maria Ouspenskaya. Her mother urged her to pursue acting, and in 1941 she signed with Howard Hughes for The Outlaw.

Career

Jane Russell’s first film, The Outlaw 1943, faced censorship delays but became a box office success after Howard Hughes marketed it by emphasizing her physique. She signed a seven-year contract with Hughes, which restricted her roles to films like His Kind of Woman 1951 and The Las Vegas Story 1952. In 1953 she co-starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Marilyn Monroe, playing Dorothy Shaw and demonstrating her comedic talent.
