Born in Brooklyn in 1941 to a teacher mother and a father who played double-bass in the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, Jessica Walter grew up in Queens. Her family was of Russian Jewish descent, and her uncle was actor Jerry Jarrett. She attended the High School of Performing Arts and later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, starting her career in summer stock.
Walter made her film debut in Sidney Lumet’s The Group 1966 as the brash Libby. That same year she appeared in Grand Prix 1966 as the bored wife of a racing driver. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as the psychotic Evelyn in Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut Play Misty for Me 1971. She won an Emmy for her lead role in the 1974 series Amy Prentiss. In the 1980s she turned to comedy, appearing in The Flamingo Kid 1984 and the short-lived sitcom Three’s a Crowd 1984. Walter married Ross Bowman in 1966; they divorced in 1976. Their daughter, Brooke Bowman, was born in 1972. In 1983 she married actor Ron Leibman; they performed together in Tartuffe at the Los Angeles Theater Center in 1986 and remained together until his death in 2019. Walter was the sister of screenwriter Richard Walter and aunt of Daniel Walter. In 1966, she was rescued from a fire in her Manhattan apartment by fireman Robert Post.
