Jussi Björling.

Jussi Björling was born Johan Jonatan Björling on 2 February 1911 in Stora Tuna, Dalarnas län, Sweden. His father, David Björling, was a singer who introduced him to music. He studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he refined his vocal technique, setting the stage for an operatic career that began in the late 1930s.

Jussi Björling began performing with major orchestras in the late 1930s. In 1940, he sang the tenor part in Arturo Toscanini’s radio broadcast of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. His studio recordings of complete operas, notably Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème and Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore from the 1950s, are definitive. He also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1948, broadening his audience.

Jussi Björling married Anna-Lisa Berg, with whom he had two children: Rolf and Ann Charlotte. He had two brothers, Olle and Gösta, both of whom also pursued musical careers. Despite his fame, he remained focused on his family. He died of a heart attack on 9 September 1960 in Siarö, Stockholms län, Sweden, at age 49.

Jussi Björling ranks among the finest tenors in operatic history and is compared to Enrico Caruso. His recordings continue to be treasured, particularly his complete opera sets. His 1959 Swedish version of O Holy Night O helga natt is a beloved Christmas staple in Sweden. He was awarded the Swedish royal medal Litteris et Artibus for his artistic contributions. Today, he is most remembered for his powerful, pure tenor voice and his definitive interpretations of Italian opera.
