Early life

Hermann Hesse was born on 2 July 1877 in Calw, Germany, to Marie Hesse and Johannes Hesse. Marulla Hesse was his only sibling. He attended the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium and later the Evangelical Seminaries of Maulbronn and Blaubeuren, where he received a religiously inflected education.

Career

Hesse’s 1922 novel Siddhartha was adapted into a film in 1972. His 1927 novel Steppenwolf was adapted into a 1974 film and inspired the name of the American rock band Steppenwolf. The 2002 film The Hours featured his poem. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Goethe Prize, and the Peace Prize of the German Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Association.

Personal life

Hesse married three times: Maria Bernoulli 1904–1923, Ruth Wenger 1924–1927, and Ninon Ausländer 1931–1962, and had three sons: Bruno born 1905, Heiner born 1909, and Martin born 1911. Among his grandchildren are Christina, Simon, Silver, David, Eva, and Sibylle Hesse.

Legacy

The American rock band Steppenwolf and the Slovenian rock band Siddharta both took their names from his novels. His novel Steppenwolf is considered a classic of 20th-century literature. He remains one of the most widely read German-language authors. His awards include the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Goethe Prize.
