Who was Lord Byron?

BIOGRAPHY

Lord Byron — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born in London on January 22, 1788, George Gordon Byron was the son of Captain John Mad Jack Byron and Catherine Gordon, a Scottish heiress. His father abandoned the family, and his mother raised him in Aberdeen, Scotland. Born with a club foot, Byron endured cruel taunts from his mother and peers, especially after overhearing his neighbor Mary Chaworth call him that little lame boy. He attended Aberdeen Grammar School before moving to Harrow School and later Trinity College, Cambridge, where he pursued a hedonistic lifestyle and wrote his first poems.

Career

Byron’s poetic career ignited in 1812 with the first two cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, making him famous overnight. He followed with a string of popular works including The Giaour 1813, The Corsair 1814, and Manfred 1817. In 1818, he began his masterpiece Don Juan, an epic satirical poem that he continued until his death. He also gave his first speech in the House of Lords, defending the Luddites. After scandal forced him into exile, he continued writing and became a central figure of the Romantic movement.

Personal life

Byron married Anne Isabella Milbanke in 1815, and their only child, Ada Lovelace, was born that December. The marriage failed quickly, and Annabella left Byron in 1816, taking Ada with her. Byron had earlier engaged in an incestuous relationship with his half-sister Augusta Leigh, who gave birth to Elizabeth Medora Leigh in 1814. During his exile in Italy, he had a brief affair with Claire Clairmont, resulting in a daughter, Allegra Byron, who died in 1822 at age six. He also had relations with numerous other women and men and kept a menagerie of animals at his home in Venice.

Legacy

Byron’s influence pervaded Romantic literature, inspiring poets like Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats. His daughter Ada Lovelace is recognized as the world’s first computer programmer for her work on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine. A memorial to Byron was placed in Westminster Abbey in 1969, and the programming language Ada was named in his daughter’s honor. His life and works have been portrayed in numerous films and television series, and his iconic status as a romantic hero endures. He is most remembered for his poetry, particularly Don Juan and Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, and for his passionate support for Greek independence.
