Who is Meghan Markle?

BIOGRAPHY

Meghan Markle — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born on August 4, 1981, at West Park Hospital in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, Meghan Markle is the daughter of Doria Ragland, a social worker and yoga instructor, and Thomas Markle, an Emmy-winning television lighting director. Her parents divorced when she was six, and she grew up in the View Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood, often visiting the set of Married… with Children where her father worked.

She attended private schools, including Immaculate Heart High School, and later Northwestern University, where she double-majored in theater and international studies. While at Northwestern, she interned at the American embassy in Buenos Aires and studied abroad in Madrid.

Career

Meghan Markle made her first onscreen appearance in a small role on General Hospital in 2002. She had guest roles on CSI: NY and Fringe and worked as a briefcase girl on Deal or No Deal. In July 2011, she joined the cast of Suits as Rachel Zane, a role she played until late 2017. Her character evolved from a paralegal to an attorney, and she used her platform to highlight issues of gender inequality and racial stereotyping in Hollywood.

In 2014, she founded the lifestyle website The Tig, which featured interviews with influential women. She released a clothing line in 2016. In 2017, she became engaged to Prince Harry and retired from acting, closing her social media accounts and moving to London for royal engagements.

Personal life

Meghan Markle married actor and producer Trevor Engelson in 2011; they divorced in 2014. She became engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, and they married on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. After marriage, she became the Duchess of Sussex. The couple has two children: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor born May 6, 2019 and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor born June 4, 2021. They stepped back as senior royals in 2020 and moved to the United States. She has a close relationship with her mother, Doria, but is estranged from her father and half-siblings.

Legacy

Meghan Markle’s influence reaches beyond her acting work. As a mixed-race woman, she has been an advocate for racial and gender equality, speaking at the UN and launching initiatives like the Archewell Foundation with Prince Harry. Her fashion and style have influenced trends, and her clothing line sold out in 2016. In 2018, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. After stepping back from royal duties, she has continued humanitarian work and signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. She broke barriers as the first American to use the HRH style, and her role on Suits remains a signature credit.

Emma has 8 years of editorial experience and a very clear idea of what a good biography looks like. At Famousy, she runs the editorial operation and decides what meets the bar and what doesn't. She's the kind of editor who remembers the profiles she pushed back on more clearly than the ones she approved. That's not a complaint. That's exactly why the site reads the way it does.
