She attended Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs and began performing as a child actress with the Bintang Soerabaja troupe. She later sang and acted with the Warnasari troupe.

Career

Mimi Mariani’s film debut came in Inspektur Rachman 1950, followed by a supporting role in Rodrigo de Villa 1952. Fred Young cast her as the lead in his musical film Lenggang Djakarta 1953, a role that earned her attention from critics and established her as a lead actress. In 1953 she also appeared in Machluk Raksasa, Belenggu Masjarakat, and Kassan. In 1954 she starred as the title character in Sri Asih, the first Indonesian superhero film. She married co-star Turino Djunaedy in 1955 and continued working, with films including Rahasia Sukudomas, Putri Gunung, Djubah Hitam, and Debu Revolusi all 1954, as well as Oh, Ibuku and Ibu dan Putri 1955. After a crisis in the Indonesian film industry, she moved to theatre, returning for Nina 1960 and Limapuluh Megaton 1961. Her final films were minor roles in Cheque AA 1966 and B-29 1968.

Personal life

After her last marriage she changed her name to Sumiarto Suharto. In 1969 she was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent two surgeries. The cancer spread to her spleen, preventing a third operation. After five months of bed rest, she slipped into a coma and died at her home in Kebon Kelapa, Gambir, Central Jakarta on May 1, 1971, a month before her 43rd birthday. Her funeral at Karet Bivak Cemetery was attended by film figures Fifi Young, Sofia W.D., W.D. Mochtar, S. Poniman, Aminah Banowati, and Wolly Sutinah.
