Early life

Vanessa Anne Hudgens was born on December 14, 1988 in Salinas, California. Her family moved to San Diego when she was a toddler. Her younger sister, Stella Hudgens, also became an actress. Her mother, Gina, is from the Philippines; her father, Greg, was a firefighter of English, German, Irish, and Scottish descent, with possible Native American ancestry. Her musician grandparents encouraged her to perform. At age 8, she started appearing in musical theater. She attended Orange County School of the Arts briefly before switching to homeschooling to focus on acting.

Career

In 2006, Vanessa Hudgens was cast as Gabriella Montez in Disney Channel’s High School Musical, a television movie that became a cultural phenomenon. She was the only cast member with a solo song on the soundtrack. Her debut album V, released in September 2006, sold 500,000 copies and earned gold certification. After the franchise’s success, she starred in films including Bandslam 2009, Beastly 2011, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 2012, and Spring Breakers 2012.
