Who is Vanessa Paradis?

BIOGRAPHY

Vanessa Paradis — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Her parents, André and Corinne Paradis, raised Vanessa and her older sister Alysson in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés. She idolized James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, whose rebellious glamour would later influence her own style. She attended Lycée Marcelin-Berthelot and Paris-Sorbonne University before starting her music career.

Career

At 14, Vanessa Paradis released Joe Le Taxi, which topped the French charts for 11 weeks and reached No. 3 in the UK in 1988. She made her film debut in Jean-Claude Brisseau’s White Wedding 1989 and won the César Award for Most Promising Actress.

After that film, she focused on music, releasing albums and rejecting offers from directors Pedro Almodóvar and John Boorman. In 1995 she starred in Élisa, then stepped back from acting to focus on her relationship with Johnny Depp and their children. She returned to music with Bliss 2000, dedicated to Depp and their daughter Lily. Her 2007 album Divinidylle earned her two Victoires de la Musique awards. She also became the face of Chanel. In the 2010s she acted in films including Heartbreaker 2010 and Knife+Heart 2018.

Personal life

Vanessa Paradis was in a relationship with actor Johnny Depp from 1998 to 2012. The couple had two children: daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp born May 27, 1999 and son John Christopher Depp III, known as Jack born April 29, 2002. During their relationship, they owned homes in Hollywood Hills, a farm in Southern France, and apartments in Paris, Manhattan, and the Bahamas. After their split, Paradis began dating director Samuel Benchetrit in 2016, working together on the film Dog 2017. They married on June 30, 2018, in a small ceremony in Saint-Simeon, France. She also has an older sister, Alysson Paradis.

Legacy

In 2007, the French government named Vanessa Paradis Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, recognizing her contribution to cultural enrichment. She was later elevated to Knight of the Legion of Honour. Her influence extends beyond her own work: her daughter Lily-Rose Depp has become a successful actress and model. Paradis has also been the face of Chanel, representing the brand for years. Her music, particularly the 2007 album Divinidylle, won multiple Victoires de la Musique awards. She even has her own look-alike puppet on the French show Les Guignols de l’info. In 2016, she served on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival official competition. She is remembered as a versatile performer whose career spanned pop music, cinema, and fashion.
