Mikhail Gorbachev

Russia

Mikhail Gorbachev became General Secretary of the USSR in 1985 and introduced reforms that ended the Cold War. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his role in reducing nuclear threats and enabling German reunification. Despite global acclaim, he was widely unpopular in Russia, receiving less than 1% of the vote in the 1996 presidential election. He died on August 30, 2022, in Moscow.
