Ismail Kadare

Albania

Ismail Kadare, the first winner of the International Booker Prize in 2005, was an Albanian writer who used allegory to critique the totalitarian regime of Enver Hoxha. His novels The General of the Dead Army and The Palace of Dreams brought Albanian literature to world attention. Kadare died on July 1, 2024 in Tirana at age 88.
