Early life

Born 24 December 1798 in Zaosie, then part of the Russian Empire, now in Belarus, Mickiewicz was the son of lawyer Mikołaj Mickiewicz. At Vilnius University he joined secret patriotic societies, an involvement that shaped his Romantic and nationalist worldview.

Career

Mickiewicz led Polish Romanticism, earning comparisons to Byron and Goethe. He became one of Poland’s Three Bards, a designation that marked him as the national poet. While a student at Vilnius University, he wrote poetry and dramas expressing Romantic ideals and political activism. He also worked as a translator and publicist; European audiences read his writings widely.

Personal life

Mickiewicz married Celina Szymanowska; they had two children, Władysław Mickiewicz and Maria Gorecka. He had two siblings, Aleksander and Franciszek, and his father was Mikołaj Mickiewicz. He died of cholera in Constantinople in 1855.
