Early life

Growing up in post-colonial Harare, Oliver Mtukudzi absorbed a mix of local and international music. By his teenage years, he performed in local bands, drawing inspiration from traditional mbira music and South African mbaqanga—the roots of his later Tuku style.

Career

Mtukudzi’s breakthrough came with the film Neria 1991, where he played Jethro, Neria’s brother. The film’s success in Zimbabwe launched his acting career, and he also contributed to its soundtrack. His music career gained momentum with hits like Neria and Todini, leading to tours across Africa and beyond. Leading a band of guitarists, keyboardists, percussionists, and dancers, he was set to release his 67th album when he died in 2019. His contributions earned him the All African Music Legend Award.

Personal life

Mtukudzi’s children include singer Selmor Mtukudzi and Sam Mtukudzi, who died in a car crash on 15 March 2010 at age 21. The loss deeply affected him, and he honored Sam’s memory through his music. His family remained central to his life, with Selmor continuing his musical legacy.

Legacy
