Early life

Studying at École Estienne in Paris, Siné developed his skills as an illustrator and satirical cartoonist. Born Maurice Albert Sinet on 31 December 1928 in Paris, he absorbed the city’s intellectual culture. This background prepared him for his later career as a provocative graphic artist.

Career

Siné made his film debut in Louise-Michel 2008 at age 79, playing M. Pinchon. He followed this with a role in Mammuth 2010 as Le viticulteur. Siné worked primarily as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator, founding the magazine Siné Mensuel. His sharp wit and political commentary defined his work in French satire.

Personal life

Siné married Susanne Anik Kroum and later Catherine Sinet. He had two children, Maud Sinet and Sung-kwon Sinet, and one stepchild, Stéphane Mercurio. He died in Paris on 5 May 2016 at age 87 from complications following surgery.

Legacy

Siné founded Siné Mensuel, a magazine continuing his tradition of provocative humor. His later film roles introduced him to a wider audience. He won the Prix de l’Humour noir for his dark comedic style. He is remembered as a fearless commentator and artist.
