TL;DR

Frank Sinatra won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1953 for his role in From Here to Eternity, resurrecting a career that had nearly collapsed after a vocal cord hemorrhage. He became the first solo pop star with the bobbysoxer craze of the 1940s and dominated music and film for decades. Who was Frank Sinatra?

BIOGRAPHY

Frank Sinatra — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1915 to Italian immigrants Dolly and Anthony Martin Sinatra, weighing over 13 pounds at birth and nearly dying during a forceps delivery that left scars. His mother, a practical nurse, and father, a tavern operator, had hoped for a girl and named him Francis after the feminine name they had chosen. Growing up in gritty Hoboken, Sinatra carried his own P.A. system as a saloon singer, determined to work hard to get ahead.

Career

From Here to Eternity 1953 earned Sinatra an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and revived his career after a vocal cord hemorrhage in 1952. He followed with performances in Suddenly 1954 and The Man with the Golden Arm 1955, earning a Best Actor nomination for the latter. As a member of the Rat Pack, he starred in Ocean’s Eleven 1960 and produced films including Robin and the 7 Hoods 1964. His directorial debut, None But the Brave 1965, was the first Japanese-American co-production.

Personal life

Sinatra married four times: Nancy Barbato 1939-1951, Ava Gardner 1951-1957, Mia Farrow 1966-1968, and Barbara Sinatra 1976-1998. His affair with Gardner ended his first marriage and damaged his career. He fathered three children: Nancy Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Tina Sinatra. In 1963, his son Frank Jr. was kidnapped; Sinatra paid a $250,000 ransom and the kidnappers were caught.

Legacy

Sinatra influenced music and film: he inspired the Johnny Fontaine character in The Godfather 1972 and was named Entertainer of the Century in 2000. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 and a Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. His song New York, New York became an anthem for the Yankees. With over five decades of work, he remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

With 7 years of research experience, he's developed an almost unreasonable eye for inaccurate career timelines, misattributed credits, and dates that don't quite add up. He doesn't publish anything he can't verify. The profiles on Famousy are as accurate as they are largely because of work you'll never see his name on.
