J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings sold over 100 million copies by 2004, making it the best-selling fiction book. Born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, he published The Hobbit in 1937. A philologist and Oxford professor, he invented 14 languages and died in 1973 at age 81.
